TYR CXT-1 Shoe Review - Pat Velner Special Edition

Updated: Nov 24, 2023

TYR made a splash in the CrossFit world by outfitting some of the world's fittest athletes, like Tia-Clair Toomey and six of the top ten men on the elite individual side

TYR is now proving itself to be a performance-focused company with significant results. AMRAP Antics recently picked up a pair of CXT-1 training shoes to put them to the test.

What is the CXT-1 Trainer?

The CXT-1 Trainer is a shoe that delivers stability and support, perfect for CrossFit and functional fitness enthusiasts. It's like a well-fitting TYR swimsuit, only for your feet. The solid toe bumper protects without jamming your toes during explosive takeoffs and landings. The side guards make you feel like your feet are in a "cage" when squatting, providing a solid shoe for training.

The CXT-1 has a "Surge NRG" foam midsole that provides ankle and arch support, even under the bar when lifting heavy weights. The stability platform in the shoe is impressive and deserves major kudos. The combination of materials is responsive through the forefoot during aerobic activities like dubs and box jumps.

TYR's CXT-1 has a supportive sole that allows proper positioning during lifts while remaining comfortable for running and other movements. The tongue is breathable and provides an additional layer of comfort and protection, and the multi-insert lace bite adds stability and an aesthetic touch.

TYR's 9mm heel-to-toe drop is higher than other CrossFit shoes, but it takes the load off the ankles and achilles, transferring the load to bigger areas of the body. This is beneficial for previous high-level athletes or individuals who are new to the sport/training, or those with weak ankles. The shoe is true to size, but if you have narrower feet, you won't feel like you're slipping from side to side.

TYR CXT-1 Shoe Review

I have been lucky enough to have been training with the CXT-1 Pat Velner Edition for about 3 months now. I was reticent to share a review too early on as I wanted the CXT-1 Shoe review to be unbiased and in-depth.

CXT-1 Shoe Review

Adaptability

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I think that the CXT-1 is probably the best all round CrossFit shoe on the market at the moment. It has the lifting capabilities of a Metcon and the adaptability to plyo movements and running of a Nano but with none of the drawbacks of either. Like a pair of Nanos that have a more solid heel for lifting that can tackle any workout.

Style

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was lucky enough to bag a pair of the Pat Velner limited edition CXT-1 and they are sleek. The mesh pattern on the top of the shoe looks great and the blue tints drew a lot of attention too.

Durability

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I must say I have put these shoes through the ringer. I have rope climbed, ran, lifted, even mountain biked in these shoes and they have held up perfectly...almost. The only note I've had with the CXT-1 was when I was doing wall-walks as part of the 2023 CrossFit Open and I noticed after the workout that the rubber toe box had come away from the stitching - that might be down to me falling from the wall and scraping my feet on the way down.

Comfort

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This might be a personal preference for myself but the CXT-1 are slightly narrow on my feet. For those who are used to a wider shoe or even barefoot, it's definitely worth trying before you buy. However for the majority, the CXT-1 is a very comfortable shoe with a solid heel and a nice platform for lifting but a shoe that is comfortable to run with and doesn't "slap" the floor like a Metcon would.

Overall

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Overall I would highly rate the TYR CXT-1, a stylish shoe that packs and punch and can take everything you throw at it. A really solid CrossFit shoe and in my experience one of the best all round CrossFit shoes you can buy. The only gripes I had I think were personal to me so I would give the CXT-1 a 5 Star rating. Proper Job!

TYR CXT-1 vs Nike Metcons

The TYR CXT-1 Trainer and Nike Metcon Trainer are two popular cross-training shoes that are designed for use in a variety of fitness activities. While both shoes have many similarities, there are some key differences that may make one more suitable for your needs than the other. Here is a comparison of the two shoes:

Design and Fit: Both the TYR CXT-1 Trainer and Nike Metcon Trainer are designed to provide support and stability for a variety of exercises, including weightlifting, plyometrics, and cardio. The TYR CXT-1 Trainer features a lightweight, breathable mesh upper with synthetic overlays for added support. It also has a padded tongue and collar for added comfort. The Nike Metcon Trainer features a similar design, with a breathable mesh upper and synthetic overlays, as well as a padded tongue and collar. However, it has a wider toe box and a more flexible sole than the TYR CXT-1 Trainer, which can make it more comfortable for certain exercises.

Performance: Both the TYR CXT-1 Trainer and Nike Metcon Trainer are designed to provide excellent performance in a variety of activities. The TYR CXT-1 Trainer has a durable rubber outsole with multidirectional traction, which provides excellent grip on a variety of surfaces. It also has a stable heel platform that is ideal for weightlifting. The Nike Metcon Trainer also has a durable rubber outsole with multidirectional traction, but it has a slightly more flexible sole than the TYR CXT-1 Trainer, which can make it better for dynamic movements like box jumps and burpees.

Nike Metcons

Durability: Both the TYR CXT-1 Trainer and Nike Metcon Trainer are built to withstand the rigors of intense training. The TYR CXT-1 Trainer has a reinforced toe cap and heel counter for added durability, as well as a high-abrasion rubber outsole that can stand up to repeated use. The Nike Metcon Trainer also has a reinforced toe cap and heel counter, as well as a durable rubber outsole with a sticky rubber forefoot for added traction.

Price: The TYR CXT-1 Trainer is typically priced slightly lower than the Nike Metcon Trainer, making it a more affordable option for those on a budget. However, the Nike Metcon Trainer may be worth the extra investment for those who prioritize a wider toe box and a more flexible sole.

Overall, both the TYR CXT-1 Trainer and Nike Metcon Trainer are excellent cross-training shoes that can provide support and stability for a variety of exercises. While the TYR CXT-1 Trainer may be a better choice for weightlifting and the Nike Metcon Trainer may be better for dynamic movements, the decision ultimately comes down to personal preference and the specific needs of the individual.
