Padel is quickly becoming the sport to watch in the UK and across the world. With more courts opening across the UK, more social media posts and more television coverage, people are starting to play padel more and more.

But for those starting out, what actually is padel?

What is Padel?

Padel is a mix between Tennis and Squash. Played in doubles on an enclosed court surrounded by walls of glass about a third the size of a tennis court.

The ball can bounce off any wall but can only hit the ground once before being returned and points are scored when the ball bounces twice on the oppositions side of the court.

The rules and scoring are very similar to tennis but the biggest difference being the serves.

The padel serve is an under arm serve which helps the ball bounce off the walls and giving the server a better chance to position themselves.

The fast paced game tends to have longer rallies than tennis due to being able to bounce the balls off the walls so points are won not by strength and power but by skill and strategy.

The padel rackets are also a big difference to tennis and squash with a large flat surface usually made out of carbon and rubber to deaden the return and allow for more skilful plays, the handle is also shorter than tennis or squash which again means the power is slightly less but there is more control.
